Heirloom Tomatoes: Why Heritage Seeds Are Returning to Our Gardens

Discover the richness of heirloom tomato varieties – from Oxheart to Blue Pearl. Why these varieties are healthier, tastier, and more important for biodiversity.

Heirloom tomatoes are varieties that have been passed down from generation to generation for more than 50 years. Unlike modern hybrids, heirloom tomatoes are not genetically modified and retain the authentic flavor our grandparents knew.

Why Choose Heirloom Varieties?

  • Superior flavor – more intense, sweeter, and more aromatic than hybrids
  • Higher nutritional value – more lycopene, Vitamin C, and antioxidants
  • Biodiversity – preserving genetic diversity of our plant species
  • Seeds can be saved – unlike F1 hybrids, seeds produce identical plants
  • Resistance to local conditions – adapted to our climate
  • Cultural heritage – part of our agricultural history

Oxheart (Cuore di Bue)

The most famous heirloom variety in Croatia. Large, meaty heart-shaped fruits, ideal for salads and caprese. Very few seeds, predominantly flesh. The plant is indeterminate and can grow over 2 meters tall.

White Beauty

A rare white tomato with creamy-yellow flesh. Low acidity makes it ideal for those sensitive to acidic foods. Excellent choice for gourmet salads and sauces.

Blue Pearl

A unique variety with dark purple skin rich in anthocyanins – the same antioxidants found in blueberries. Compact plant ideal for balconies and small gardens.

How to Grow Heirloom Varieties

  • Sowing: Indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost (March)
  • Transplanting: When frost danger has passed (May)
  • Spacing: 60–90 cm between plants
  • Support: Stakes or cages required as they are indeterminate
  • Watering: Regularly, avoid wetting foliage
  • Harvesting: When fruit changes color and yields slightly to touch

Tip: You can save heirloom seeds for next season! Choose the finest fruit, extract the seeds, wash and air dry them for 5–7 days. Store in paper bags in a dry, dark place.
